San Diego Zoo Centennial Celebration and Nighttime Zoo

San Diego Zoo Centennial #sdzoo100

Growing up here in San Diego, my memories of trips to the San Diego Zoo date back as far as I can remember. My late grandfather was a big fan too and even has his name listed as a donor on the orangutan exhibit. Now that I have two children of my own, I’ve been visiting quite frequently again and love every moment we spend there. This year will be especially fun to visit the San Diego Zoo as they are celebrating their 100th birthday!

San Diego Zoo Legacy

The legacy of the San Diego Zoo began 100 years ago with the powerful roar of a lone lion. This roar inspired Dr. Henry Wegeforth to protect animals that were abandoned after an international exposition in neighboring Balboa Park. Since this day in 1916, San Diego Zoo Global has become a world leader in connecting people to wildlife and conservation. You have an opportunity to be a part of these conservation efforts through unique experiences being offered all year long as part of the San Diego Zoo centennial celebration.

San Diego Zoo Centennial Celebration

A cornerstone of this year’s San Diego Zoo centennial celebration is Nighttime Zoo. This has long been a favorite of our family as the animals all seem to really come alive at night! Happening all summer long (through September 5th), the Nighttime Zoo will showcase live music, fun activities, and spectacular Centennial pageantry puppets. With the warm San Diego summer weather, nighttime is a great time to visit the zoo!

  1. As a San Diego native I’m embarrassed to say I’ve never been to the nighttime Zoo. ???? From your reviews I know I’m missing out, but I think this year will be the year to check it out. 100th birthday of the Zoo, I wanna be part of that celebration!

  2. I grew up going to the San Diego Zoo and now I’m taking my kids there. Hope to get to the nighttime zoo this summer… I’ve heard you see so much more animal activity when it cools down a little.
