Tips for trying to conceive

  1. Get a Checkup
The best place to start with trying to conceive is to make sure your body is ready for it. Though many women don’t do this, it’s always a good idea to get a quick check up when you decide you want to get pregnant. Your doctor may happen upon something that could slow down the process or that could pose a risk to you or your future baby. Better safe than sorry, right?
  2. Be Healthy
Most women know that it’s best to eat a healthy diet when they’re pregnant, but why wait until then? Do what you can to get your body ready for the enormous task of carrying a child, and start eating healthy and exercising now! You may have a better chance of conceiving if your body is getting the nutrients it needs and if your weight is at a healthy level.
  3. Take Vitamins
Of course prenatal vitamins are great during pregnancy, but did you know that they’re also great to take before you’re even trying to conceive? You can get a head start on increasing your intake of folic acid, which is essential to a healthy pregnancy. Try to find a vitamin with at least 400mcg of folic acid, it may not even technically be a prenatal vitamin as many every day vitamins also contain folic acid now.
  4. Cut Back on Vices
I’m just going to make this one simple. Stop smoking, now! Don’t plan on trying to quit while you’re trying to conceive. Same goes with drinking. If you’re a heavy drinker, this is a good time to start cutting back or stop altogether and prepare your body to go without booze for 9 months! I’ll be honest, I still had a glass of wine each week during my last 2 trimesters of both pregnancies, but it was a far cry from the couple glasses a night I was used to.
  5. Get Your Partner Healthy Too
While you’re getting healthy, make sure your partner is too! Ensure that he isn’t using recreational drugs and get him on a healthy diet too. It’ll help the chances that he’ll have healthy sperm and that together you’ll have a healthy baby!
  6. Relax
Chances are, you won’t be successful right when you start trying to conceive. Don’t stress. The more you stress, the more your body will resist getting pregnant. Try to stay as relaxed as possible while you’re trying to conceive. Do yoga, go for long walks, watch funny movies, hang out with friends, whatever it takes for you to unwind and be as stress free as possible!
  7. Don’t Try So Hard
This one is tricky! From personal experience, when I got so caught up in charting temps, watching the calendar, taking countless pregnancy tests, it just seemed like I would never get pregnant. As soon as we decided to take a break from the madness that is trying to conceive, I booked a nice trip to Italy and lo and behold, I turned up pregnant right away and cancelled said trip! Sure, you’ll be trying, but just don’t try so hard. Just live your life and it’ll happen when it’s meant to be!
  8. Know Your Cycle
Not every woman has a standard 28 day cycle, in fact I would guess that most don’t. Have an idea of your cycle length and approximately what day you ovulate. I wouldn’t get serious about it all unless you’ve had no luck for 6 months or so, but still know your basics. Learn how to read your body’s signs of ovulation and perhaps you won’t ever have to bother with ovulation tests!
  9. Keep it Fun!
Let’s be honest. Scheduling out all of your baby making sessions isn’t all that romantic. Try to keep some spontaneity in your relationship and keep things fun. If you must schedule, make a date night out of it! Don’t let making a baby turn into a chore, it’s supposed to be the most fun part of the whole process!
